2012 has been a major perfume year for me. I launched my decanting company, RiktigParfym in order to enlighten my fellow Swedish citizens in all ways olfactory. Judging from the feedback I get there seem to be some progress going on in this matter
As I’ve been setting up the RiktigParfym website, the scents I’ve worn the most in 2012 have been the brands I sell; Atelier Colognes, Etat Libre d’Orange and Serge Lutens. But there has been time for other discoveries as well. The brands, except the already mentioned, that have made the biggest impression om me during 2012 are the following:
Amouage. Thanks to lovely Suzanne of Eiderdown Press I finally got to try Amouage out. If perfumeland was a subway map, full of intersecting lines ending up in different places, the Amouages would be the end stops. Not that they are the least accessible (that’s not the case) but for each and every one of them (almost), I really don’t know what could be done in order to improve them. They are pure perfection, without ever being boring. I can’t pick a favorite here but my major loves are Woman(Epic, Memoir, Gold), Ubar and Library Collection I. For 2013 I’m very much looking forward to try Beloved, the Interludes (does that sound like a couple you’d have over for dinner?) and any new releases planned.
Guerlain. Yes, I know, I’m the latest perfumista to the party but that doesn’t stop me from having fun once I arrive! Such an old perfume house, soooo many great scents! Some that I’ve worn and loved during 2012 are Shalimar Initiale, Sous le Vent, Chamade, Samsara, Lys Soleia and Mitsouko. In 20113 I’m planning to go through the rest!
Sonoma Scent Studio. I keep reaching for these, there is something deeply calming about them and there always seems to be a scent for every situation. My biggest love right now is Tabac Aurea but I’ve also been very pleased about the way I smell while wearing Voile de Violette, Jour Ensoille, Champagne et Bois and Insence Pure.
Then, 3 perfume wishes for 2013:
- Looks like incense is already the new leather and with the speed this note is trending, ”encense” might even become the new ”oud”? It’s such a versatile note, I’ve just started to appreciate it this year and now I want more more and MORE.
- In florals, we’ve had a lot of gardenias and orange blossom in 2012. This is all well, but I’ve craving lilies, everything from the clean and pleasant Lys Soleia, watery Lys Mediterraine, cuddly Vanilla Galante and weird Charogne. But there got to be more! Luca Turin says that what sets the scent of lilies apart from other flowers is a note of ham. So, come on, someone give me a lily perfume that plays up the ham, I dare you! Or maybe amp it up even more, give me a salami lily cyphre. That will become my new ”evil scent”. And of course, the year will not be complete without an array of ”Lys Encenses” to choose from. Bring it on!
- My last wish is that EU immediately stops this nonsense about banning substances that have been used in perfumery since the dawn of time. I’m genuinely sorry for everyone that suffers from perfume allergies and I’m all for finding new substances less likely to cause allergies that will help more people to use perfumes without discomfort. But PLEASE, the fact that there are people that are allergic to some of the old substances does not call for discontinuing or changing classic scents into unrecognizable messes. And if the perfume industry does not want to label every single ingredient, as they want to protect their secret recipes, can’t this be solved by labeling the new allergen-free perfumes instead with ”Guaranteed to only contain safe ingredients”, or something like that, and label the old ones ”Use at own risk”? My god, we’re all adults here, shouldn’t we be able to work something out that keeps everyone pleased!
And finally, how about you? Any perfume wishes for the future, great scent discoveries of 2012 or just anything? I’d love to hear! And thanks for reading and have very happy new year, all of you!

I adore a good incense note so your idea of incense being the new oud is fine by me and I totally support your Guerlain exploration – definitely worth it!
Hermes Jour d’ Hermes and ELdO The Afternoon of a Faun are two outstanding perfumes that I’ve been wearing a lot this month and just ordered samples of Abdes Salaam Tawaf, Amouage Beloved and Hermes L’Ambre des Merveilles. Looking forward to your 2013 blog posts
Happy holidays and best wishes for the new year to you and your family!
Thank you
Oooh, I really have to try Jour d’ Hermes, it sounds like a great choice for spring, based on what I’ve been reading about it. And The Afternoon of a Faun is a great scent! Spicy, cool and foresty at the same time, like a magical glade in the forest that you really shouldn’t visit (because of the fauns that tend to hang out there, we all know what they’re up to, don’t we?) but one still can’t help being drawn to it, andending up there, time after time…
My biggest perfume discovery in 2012 was that I ended up falling utterly in love with more all-natural perfumes than at any time ever. And one that left me completely head-over-heels was House of Matriarch’s Carmine, which came from you, of course.
I guess if I have any perfume wishes for 2013, it’s to meet more of my online friends. I’m hoping that someday I’ll get back to Sweden and can meet you in person, Sigrun (and to see more of your beautiful country). (And to travel by water taxi again and again … gosh, I really loved that!)
Happy New Year to you!
Meeting online friends is a great wish for 2013! I’ve been seeing some of the parfumistas here in Sweden and I don’t think I’ve ever met such a bunch of interesting, lovely and easy-to-connect-to people, ever
Maybe it’s something about how the sense of smell is connected to the oldest part of the brain, when most of ones energy is spent there while hanging out one get to bypass regular social structures and head straight for the fun
I’d absolutely LOVE if you came over here, you’re welcome any time!!! And as my kids are getting older it will become easer for me to travel more again, so in a few years I’ll be able to meet up with you in other places as well! Have a great New Years!!!
I’m not so sure I’m looking forward to more incense perfumes – I am not a huge fan for some reason. Maybe I was a witch in a previous life.
I am so happy to hear Guerlain is getting to you! Ha, ha! I knew it! It’s just a matter of time in the life of any perfumista before she becomes a Guerlain girl.
Welcome to the club!
Wishing you all the best in the New year and a great business with perfumes!
HI Ines! Yes, it has taken me a long time to get into incense, some of the drier varieties make my throat itch (like in CdG Avignon) so for a long while I thought I didn’t like it. But then I came across the Amouages and their soft velvety bases became a turning point
There are so many magnicient Guerlains. And it’s weird it took me so long to try them out, but now there is nothing stopping me
A very happy new year to you as well!!!
2012 was a massive year for me, perfume-wise: started blogging (although I need to get back on the wagon), got a bit more breathing room in the finances, found a US ”scent-mule,” purchased decanting supplies, joined Facebook Fragrance Friends and started getting in on some splits and swaps, explored the mimosa, heliotrope, fig and suede notes, and just generally had a grand time. Major new loves included several from the PdE line – Equistrius, Wazamba and Cuir Ottoman – and Olfactive Studio line – Lumiere Blanche and Chambre Noir – as well as Jacomo #08 and Ambre Fetiche. As far as wishes for 2013, just to keep sampling and spraying and being a part of the online community. Happy new year, Sigrun!
A happy new year to you too, Dionne! I have long been meaning to try the PdE line and Olfactive Studio sounds great as well, but haven’t gotten around to any of them just yet.
I’m looking forward to seeing more blog posts from you and I actually found my first heliotrope love during 2012, in Etros ”Heliotrope”. Have you tried it? It reminds me of a certain snack I always have when visiting my mother in Iceland, namely caramel flavored Icelandic yoghurt (Skyr)
Yes, I tried Etro’s Heliotrope, it shifted in and out of the playdough association for me, although a very sophisticated playdough. It didn’t grab me quite the same as Mazzolari’s Alessandro, L’Eau d’Hiver, L.T. Piver’s Heliotrope Blanc or POTL, but still a very lovely fragrance.
Happy New Year, Sigrun! I’m so proud of your progress! The more people out there love good perfumes, the better it will be for all of us. You’re doing an important thing.
I’m just looking forward to 2013 – nothing in particular, I just hope it will be good. In all respects.
Thank you Undina! Yes, lets hope 2013 will become a great year
