My son has a friend who’s born on Christmas Eve and a few days ago we were invited to this friends birthday party (held a little bit in advance since Christmas is such a busy time anyway). While we were preparing to go, my son said we should bring some some gold, myrrh and frankincense, ”because that’s what yo do when someone is born on Christmas Eve”. I said I didn’t know about the gold as I’d already bought a book about folding origami animals. Myrrh and frankincense, on the other hand, I might be able to arrange. I got out two perfume vials and said whichever he liked best, we’d wear to the party. The frankincense one was Lorenzo Villaroesis Incensi, a good, dry smelling incense scent that my son promptly refused to try. The myrrh was Guerlains Myrrhe & Delires, which he loved.
Right away Myrrhe & Delires made me think of ”Come All Ye Faithful”, which is one of the few Christmas carol I truly love as it celebrates the seemingly mundane things in life that actually turn out to be the biggest, such as having a few select persons sitting around a little new born baby, ooooh-ing and aaa-ing i adoration. Myrrhe & Delires is exactly like that but on an olfactory level. It might not be the biggest and loudest scent around, instead it’s utterly comfortable and enjoyable.
And what is it then? Well, Myrrhe & Delires is a sweet old Guerlain cocktail, containing a little bit of everything. There is soft and plush vanilla, liquorice that sometimes smells of myrrh and sometimes plain old candy, there is fruitiness, flowers and sweet incense that weaves in and out of the composition, adding a bit of mystery. Myrrhe & Delires smells strong when you first put it on, I love wearing it on my decollage when I go out in the cold, catching wafts out of my jacket as I move around. It turns more quiet after a while, I don’t mind as it wears beautifully as a skin scent as well.
What’s more, it’s the perfect scent for the Christmas I’m aspiring to this year. There will be no big receptions, no tables laden with every dish imaginable and the stress that goes with making those. Instead I’ll be spending lots of quality time with people I truly love and make sure there is enough space between activities not to miss the true delights in life, like being silly with my kids when picking what perfume to wear.
